In the security field, we learn that unless there is a dependable technique to verify the source of information, it could very well be spoofed, and thus is untrustworthy. Believing / Using / Depending on the unverifiable information you thus receive would be a bad idea. Applying the same principle to social networking sites, its almost impossible to trust the authenticity of a profile which is posted on a public site, where anyone with an Internet connection can create one, and become anybody, including celebrities, without requiring verification of any kind. Identity theft and impersonation attacks are thus rampant on these networks. The more unbelievable part is most people just follow / be friends with these impostors without suspecting a thing.
