Description:
We already showed you a demo of a rogue malware which poses as an Anti-Virus program and tries to get gullible users to give their credit card numbers and other personal information. So, now the big question is - How are malware authors pushing these programs to a large audience before the AV guys can find them and lock them down with signatures? Well, in recent times, Black Hat SEO techniques has become a hot favorite among malware authors!
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of fine tuning one's site to make it rank higher on search engine results. This is generally done by structuring the content as per the webmaster guidelines set by search engines, and more importantly, by having a large number of websites link to the site with keywords, for which the site aspires to rank high on search engines.
Blackhat SEO generally involves spamming the Internet with millions of pages pointing linkbacks to the malicious website where the malware is hosted for various important and "hot" keywords, people are searching for. The search engines fall prey to this link spamming and rank the malware hosting sites higher then legitimate sites due to the huge number of linkbacks to them. Thus, users unaware of the lurking danger, click on these malicious search results and end up getting infected by downloading and executing the malware.
